What Is Pediatric Restorative Dentistry?

Pediatric restorative dentistry is a field within pediatric dentistry that focuses on repairing and restoring damaged teeth to good health. Restorative dental treatments for children, tweens, and teens include treatments that protect decayed teeth, eradicate infections in teeth, and remove teeth that cannot be saved with restorative treatments.

At Valley Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, our providers are all Board-Certified pediatric dentists able to provide premium dental restorations to repair damaged teeth and return your child’s mouth to good oral health.

Benefits of Pediatric Restorative Dentistry

Eliminating pain • Preventing the spread of decay • Protecting teeth that have suffered significant damage or decay • Improving oral health • Preserving natural teeth • Preserving space for the adult teeth to erupt • Preventing minor problems from worsening into more complex problems • Saving money in the long term by treating problems early

At Valley Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, all of our pediatric dentists have chosen to earn Board Certification from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. This demonstrates our commitment to going above and beyond in education, and training to ensure that we are providing children with unmatched pediatric dental care.

At our pediatric dental practice, we have invested in technologies that make dental care safe, comfortable, and effective for children ages 0-18. We use child-size X-rays, offer age-appropriate entertainment, and provide comfort items for children who struggle with fear or anxiety.

Valley Smiles Pediatric Dentistry is proud to be an inclusive dental practice. All our dentists have undergone extensive training in treating children of all abilities, including children with special needs.

Mercury-Free White Fillings

Teeth with minor to moderate caries (tooth decay) are restored with fillings that are completely free of mercury and match the color of natural teeth.

Pediatric Dental Crowns

Teeth that have suffered significant decay may require a pediatric dental crown. At Valley Smiles Pediatric Dentistry we offer stainless steel crowns or white Bioflex crowns.

Baby Root Canal Therapy

Baby root canals are only necessary if the pulp of a child’s tooth becomes infected. An infected tooth is not only painful but will ultimately cause the tooth to fall out. A baby root canal can preserve the structure of the tooth, and therefore save the space needed for the adult tooth to erupt.

Extractions

In some cases, a child’s tooth may need to be extracted. This may be necessary if the tooth is too damaged to save, if the tooth has cracked beneath the gum line,  or if a baby tooth is preventing an adult tooth from erupting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Restorative Dentistry for Kids

Is a crown better for my child than an extraction?
If a tooth is damaged beyond treatment, it will need to be extracted. But in cases where a baby tooth can be preserved with a dental crown, it should be preserved.
Is a baby root canal better than pulling the tooth?
It depends on how much longer the tooth is likely to stay in the mouth. If the tooth is already loose, an extraction will probably be recommended. However, if your child is still very young, and not expected to get their adult teeth for a while, the baby root canal may be recommended.
Is it necessary to put a crown on a baby tooth that will fall out?
If a filling is sufficient to treat the tooth decay, a crown is not necessary. However, if a filling is insufficient, and the baby tooth is not ready to come out, a crown should be placed to eliminate pain, and to preserve the space for the adult teeth to eventually erupt.
Will restorative dental treatments hurt my child?
At Valley Smiles Pediatric Dentistry we prioritize our young patients’ comfort. To that end, the area of the mouth to be treated will be completely numb before we begin restorative treatments.
Do you offer sedation for children who are afraid of the dentist?
We do. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available and produces a relaxing sensation so that your child is at ease. Nitrous oxide also wears off very quickly.
What are the signs that my child needs a filling?
Any symptom of pain may indicate a cavity. If your child tells you their mouth hurts, it’s time to go to the dentist. Other children may stop eating. Others may develop bleeding gums, tooth discoloration, or small spots on the teeth. Some foods (hot, cold, or sweet) may suddenly cause sensitivity.
How long will a filling last?
White, mercury-free fillings provided by Valley Smiles Pediatric Dentistry are quite durable and may last 7-10 years or longer.
Is a stainless steel dental crown safe for a child?
Yes. stainless steel dental crowns are safe. They are also extremely effective in preserving molars, thereby preserving the space needed for the adult teeth to eventually erupt.
